Launched out of Waukegan this morning at 6. Ran out to 200 due East and set lines.. Picked up a few Lakers on spoons as well as a decent king down 50 on an NBK spoon. Had two full cores set with Ninja boards as well running Moonshine Flounder Pounders. Right about 8:30, the Starboard side reel began to creep. A lot like the scene from Jaws when the shark takes the bait! Shortly thereafter, the clicker is slowly picking up speed and the board begins to ease backwards. I doublecheck the setup just to make sure it wasn’t boat action. And then, away she goes! The board begins its descent and the reel starts steadily losing backing. It’s fish on time! We grab the rod and you could tell it was a heavy strong fish. We clear the board and the long battle begins. The fish stayed deep with strong head throbs and steady deep runs! After 15 minutes of slowly gaining on him, I saw the telltale sign of a large fin break the surface fifth feet behind the boat. This was clearly the largest King I’ve ever hooked. He began to cut his path in typical King fashion. Working from one side to the other, diving deep, then coming back up. He rolled on his side and I could see just how massive he was. Clearly a high twenty or better size! Eventually, we worked him to the net. I struggled to leverage the net and fish into the boat. Once safely inside the boat, I had to openly stare in amazement. This is the largest open water King I ve ever seen and I spend a lot of time on the water! We measured him at 42 inches in length. I knew he was over thirty but by how much was a guess. My estimate based on length, girth and overall size was 32 to 34 lbs. Into the woefully undersized cooler he went.

Once at the Dock, the DNR measured him at 42 inches and weight of 32 to 33 lbs.

I’m sure everyone wants to see a pic. PM me and I’ll contact someone via email to send a pic for posting!

Lt.

Congratulations. I heard you say on the radio that you had a 42". What a wonderful fish.

There was more out there today to catch than just fleas. Never seen them so thick.
