Aside from the floating weed clumps, which are freakin' horrendous, the perfect conditions have created a multi-species firestorm. October may be my favorite fishing month, and the Des Plaines is my favorite fishing destination in the area in October. The warm start to the season has the weeds dying off later than usual, unfortunately, or the sky would be the limit. Largemouth are hitting whatever lure isn't fouled on the retrieve. Not many options for dealing with the grass. I settled on a hard bodied swimbait, then a 1/2 oz silver spinnerbait with a 4" paddletail. I pulled thirteen largemouth off of one laydown. Got no love reeling downstream. All action came slow rolling at least somewhat upstream. Reeling directly upstream helped minimize hanging up, or least extended the retrieve long enough to get a few cranks and give the fish a shot at the lure. Totals were nineteen largemouth, three pike, and two smallmouth.

All fish were hitting like freight trains. Bass were between 12" and 16" with over half being larger than 14".

Lot better than the Fox. It's still like pea soup.
