Welcome to the site sarge. There's a couple other retired army guys running around here so you should be right at home.
I say it's best to get out ALL DAY! :D

Welcome to the site.
I've only fished Shab a few times during the open water season and not had much luck(weekends). But I have had some pretty decent outings on the ice up there. I usually have my best luck out around the front of the campground over the cribs there, and along the creek channel bends as you go into the NMZ.
With all the added structure in that lake getting an updated Fishing Hot Spots map is a great investment. Will you be in a boat or on shore?

Yo Sarge, here's a site that has tips from a guy who does well on Shabbona. Scroll down & mouse around behind the first button in the menu on the left side for Shabbona. Maps, Videos & tips: kevinwakeman.com He had some trouble with spammers,so ya have to copy & paste.

His Youtube site: http://www.youtube.com/kevinwakeman

I haven't fished Shabbona yet, but I lived in Huntley for 7 yrs & love those Huntley ponds. Good luck.........murph810

Welcome Sarge,
Thanks for your service.
I wasat shab once this year with Jim Kopjo "The Crappie Professor."
Needless to say, we took home Crappie limits and nearly landed a Musky that hit one of the Craps on the reel in.

Murph, if ya need a hand pokin' a few holes in secret ponds send me a PM.
Have Sled Will Travel.
I have Hemi and I ain't afraid to use it.
