This season has been nothing short of crap for me. Curious if they are biting now? Any flatheads?

Have been fishing ponds with stocked cats. This has been the worst season in my area.
Water has been low and the cats are spooky. 3 recent trips yielded 4 total cats. Stocking
numbers have also been down. But I'm hitting them hard now as 50 degree nights are
coming soon. Switching back to bass and crappie after that.

Now that you mention it, I do have amazing luck at the small pond in my village. Nobody ever fishes there so there are plenty of fish. I can catch several cats 7-15lbs almost every time I go in a matter of 1-2 hours using shrimp and a bobber.

I am mainly interested in what the hell is going on on the rivers this year. Last year I was catching flatheads on the regular, fish well over 20lbs. This year I can't even catch a channel cat for the life of me.

They completely ruined the Mchenry Dam too by closing most of the far gates on the rocky side due to them "building" a new dam.... but I have seen absolutely zero progress in construction. Idiots start a project like that, block off a ton of good fishing ground that everybody loved and get no work done on it at all. From the looks of it, that project is gonna drag out for many years making it pointless to even go now. Time for some new spots.

Many people would agree that taking out old dams is best for the river and fish.
However, this sterilizes that section of the river. I have seen this below the Hoffman
dam on the Des Plaines. It will take several years for fish holding structure to
reestablish, so you're right, time to find some new fish holding spots.

I won't reveal my spots but the Kankakee has been good to me this year with Mazonia being a close second. All channels in the 6 to 14 lbs range and probably 30 to 40 fish this season. I also make my own bait.

I was out back on 9/8 and got a stout 30" flathead and a smaller one maybe 21". Was on the Fox as usual.

It's been pretty warm for October, the Algonquin tailwater gauge is still reading water temps above 60 degrees. Not too late to get out there. I might try one more time myself.
