Labor Day weekend was good to me this year. I was able to get out and fish Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday mornings with one thing in mind - a big catfish. So far this year ive spent a lot of time finding the right spots, the right bait/rig, and the right conditions. Those three days were perfect. Cool weather with a bit of rain and mostly overcast.

My bait/rig choice has evolved a bit this year as i was always a big fan of chicken liver for channel cats in small lakes/ponds. Early this year the obvious best bait of choice was cut bluegill however. I caught more and bigger fish using cutbait on a carolina rig. As summer started and more weeds came in i made the change to using bigger baits (still cut bluegill) and suspending them off the bottom with a float. Which brings us to where my approach was at on Tuesday morning about 7am...

I was at an old farm pond i found on google earth fishing a corner of the pond that has a steep dropoff from the bank and lots of overhanging trees. I set my bait to be able 4ft down and casted into what i think to be 5-6ft of water. The pattern was cast close to the bank and let the wind drift it toward deeper water.

After about 20 minutes and few drifts i see my bobber start crusing a bit faster than normal and slowly submerging. I give it some time before leaning into the fish and securing that big cirlce hook - FISH ON! Immediately pulling drag and some huge head shakes! After about a 5 minute fight i finally get to see the fish and pull her up to the bank.

This is the one ive been after all year at 14.8lbs.
