Every once in a while, I will read reports of people catching cats through the ice. Just curious if anyone goes out and specifically targets them, and if so, what techniques are used? Thanx.

I've never caught any through the ice. However people do target them regularly and alot of folks catch them when fishing for other species on tip-ups or jigging rods. Channels cats seem to be the most active out of the species though and once you hit one there is a good chance that you'll run into more. They gather in huge schools during the hard water months. The best baits are globs of redworms, minnows or crawlers. Cats become more active late winter then early, but i could be wrong. Like I said I've never caught one through the ice but I also never targeted them, but I have seen a few here and there. I've read alot about cats over the years and these are some of the tips I remembered. Hope this helps some and good luck.

We used to get them pretty regularly thru the ice up at Petite in the Chain. Mostly a spot lure w/ minnow.
