Anyone fish the illinois for cats? Thinking about going this week for the first time ever.Any tips or techniques that your will to help with would be great ,Thanks!!

Use fresh bait - I personally like shad caught out of the river but cut bait like drum or carp work too, be sure to read regulations. A crawler as well on the bottom can keep the action going for other fish.

Not a huge fan of dip baits or livers but people use them and they work

Circle hooks and probably 3/4oz weight but go a light as you can and maintain bottom

Fish around bridges and barge pilings and you want to be on channel edge or upstream of deeper water fishing the edge of the drop

If fish aren't biting after about an hour move

Thanks for the tips .probably putting in in morris and wiil try and catch some shad for fresh bait. Do you know how the river is now as far as high/ middy? Thanks

level is fine - not sure how muddy but wouldn't be concerned with it

might want to try some of the creek mouth areas as well

A few guys I know like to run up into where the Fox river joins in.
They typically fish for cats after dark.
Asian carp are in there too,expect a few jumpin' in the boat,be prepared.

Was a slow day 4 fish in the cooler lost a few.Down river from morris and all came on dip bait.. thanks for the help!!
