Decided to fish the Fox today at the North Aurora dam. Had an absolute blast the minute I got there. First cast a had a small largemouth bass bite but he got away. Second cast I landed my first ever smallie ever, weighted about a pound I'd say. A ton of tiny largemouths came next as well as smaller smallies. Also snagged two white crappies while retrieving my #1 Mepps spinner. I found out its true how smallies fight compared to the largemouths.

Then it happened, the fish that had eluded me for over two years, a walleye. I was so excited, it fought quite well and for a second I thought it would brake my line. I was using 4lb fluorocarbon on my ultralight rod from the inland trout days. It peeled line and had a few runs until I got it close enough to land. It measured 16" but didn't have a scale to weight it, he was released to live another day.

Definitely going back!i! Caught two new species in one day, I'd say it was a good day for three hours of fishing and over twenty fish. Just wanted to share my experience on such a beautiful day with some beautiful fish.

great post, thanks for the report! consider switching to a braid. I went to a 20lb braid on my light action rod for Fox smallies, got sick of losing lures (you can usually straighten the hook on a snag) and I don't think the smallies are line shy.

Thanks, and I'll keep that it mind next time I go (probably Friday). Lost my favorite spinner bait to some damn rocks or whatever, I was pist. I want to target smallies and walleye but I don't know where to exactly as the spot I was at seemed to contain small fish. I'll probably try the other dams in Aurora or St Charles

as i understand it, fall is a numbers season, but i'm new-ish to targeting smallies. i went all spring and summer barely catching anything. all of a sudden, fishing the same water, etc, I'm catching good numbers, but very few larger ones.

look up ken g's post, very informative:

In previous years I've fished the north aurora dam area and have seen a decline in numbers and size. I'm no fish biologist but given the pressure that little stretch gets I have a feeling a lot of fish are being poached just my .02.

I agree with JB, this year was tough on that stretch of river for as well. Anywhere from the North Aurora Dam, up through Batavia, Geneva, St charles and even up in Elgin I see a lot the same people there day in and day out taking fish.
