I keep trying to give it a rest for a few months but I can't sleep knowing these conditions are begging me to wet a line and won't last forever. Only have my 6'9" med lt with 8 lb braid still out as the rest of my set ups have been stored. Wish I'da had something heavier out still. I couldn't risk lifting the fish out of the water and snapping the light line so I had to go down to get them, never pleasant with water this cold. Still tossing a jig w/ 4" grub.

This guy rose to the surface to nab my bait as I was lifting it out showing they'll move a bit if you get it close enough.

Totals were six smallies, all but one in the 13"-14" range, a rock bass, and a bold chub.

Glad to see that you are shore fishing and not risking a swim. The river has been high and fast these past days so I am assuming that you are seeking the calm pools.
I have an idea for the ID&R to save money. Just give you the tags and a ledger book and pay you some sort of stipend. Then, they can get a real idea of the number of smallies inhabitating the river.

Nice fish. The DuPage County Forest Preserve District should have a spot open for you. Dan Gringas is the new biologist after my dear friend Don LaBrose passed a few years back. Dan is very knowledgeable, fun to work with and very personable.

It's too late to quit, the bug has worked it's way into your very essence . You are hooked but at least it's worth being hooked on .

It's much better than developing a passion for cleaning the garage or mopping floors .

Sweet, man. I miss fishing the Dupage up north around Wheaton/Winfield. I haven't caught a smallmouth in years!
