When the fish ignore me, I count the fly fishing excursion to practice. I have tried to concentrate on not having my fly (wooly bugger, for the most part) not hit the water like a Belden brick causing every living creature to get the heck out of there. Then, there is the whiplash on the end of my cast causing the bugger (again) to bounce back and leave a slack leader-tippet. This always happens on longer casts (40 feet) and I catch myself with my rod tip low at the end of the cast.
When going from a (#14) humpy to a #10 bugger, I do not change my tippet. Could this be my problem? I read a great article that pointed towards the leader-tippet being probably the most important factor in a successful cast.
