I had a pretty good morning. I was in the stand and 10 minutes before shooting time I saw a deer walking through the field. 15 minutes later I saw a small buck making a scrape on the edge of the field. A couple minutes later coming from the same direction was a nice buck and a doe. The buck was leading and I waited for a nice 20 yard shot. I hit him a shade forward but it was a heart shot and he went about 75 yards before going down just out of sight. When I was tracking him I did not find any blood. I went to the last place I saw him and after taking a few steps I could smell him and found him about 10 yards away from where I last saw him. Things should start getting good. I've got 2 more bigger bucks on camera so I'm not done yet.

Congrats! Good to finally see some deer hunting success on here this year. Did you not get much arrow penetration or what do you think caused the lack of the blood trail?

I only had about 5 inches of penetration but when I was gutting him out the arrow was still stuck in the heart. There was obviously a ton of blood inside of the chest cavity. This was my urban spot and the homeowner was thrilled because I killed the one that was eating his new trees. I was glad to make them happy.

Nice deer! Pretty crazy, I shot a 9 pointer yesterday morning as well. He came out first light with another smaller 8 pt from a few hundred yards away. Grunted a few times and they came right up to 10 yards for clean shot. My shot passed through however, left a good blood trail and only made it about 50 yards away before going down.

A co-worker told me his friend shot a buck yesterday that was walking with a doe. It's a little early but I think it's starting. Nice buck C88!

Nice work guys. It really sucks when there is no blood trail. Glad you found it quickly.

Thanks, and same to you! Based on what I have been seeing, it is early but the bucks have definitely started moving a LOT more during the morning hours in the last week or so, and have started fighting, rubbing and making scrapes. With more consistent cold weather coming up [hopefully] will encourage the start. I will say this buck responded exactly as planned - short rattling sequence got his attention once he came out and grunting brought him right to me.

GL,

Chris

Both are very nice. Really like the chocolate rack on the one.

Good looking bucks. Ive got 3 does in the freezer. Leaving next week to hunt till gun season on my property down in vermilion county. I got permission to hunt 10 acres up around dupage county, but not seeing any shooters. Bucks are starting to make scrapes and Ive seen some pre rut activity. I passed on a mid 130s at 8 yds yesterday. Good luck to all that will be hunting.
