Does anyone fish for smallies in/around the Waukegan or Winthrop Harbor area? Not trying to find your hot spot but getting a feel if it is worth putting the boat in and spending time in these areas. Both have lots of rocks and "bassy" looking water. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

I have caught Smallies while casting cleos for Browns close to shore at Waukegan. I also see guys fishing the outer rocks from boats around Northpoint Marina a lot throughout the summer and I assume that's what they're targeting. I see a lot of Largemouth inside the harbor making beds and going through their spawning rituals. I actually filmed a school of baby bass with my gopro that were being guarded by momma late last summer off G dock. I wouldn't hesitate to try it because you're right, there is some good habitat in these areas.

There are definitely some around but the southern harbors are a better bet.

Good habitat up North inshore early but can get tough later in the year.
As 4Season said, much better numbers down south with offshore structure to work later in the year.

Whenever I fish out of Winthrop, I always take a pass over/near the rock reef in front of Winthrop Harbor. I have never caught any bass there ever. One time though we limited out on coho in about an hour in about 6 ft of water on spinning tackle on fathers day weekend. Wind must have been blowing out of the west consistently for a couple days or something. I have caught largemouth bass along the H and I docks however. In my opinion it's not worth the effort. Much better opportunities are to be had on Sterling Lake for both smallies and largemouth.

Don't leave your back yard after the water warms up. :winker

When you see crayfish on the rocks, pitch the holes and anywhere dark. Don't need a boat to get them, but it helps. Actual crayfish, tubes or anything close to having claws (Black and Blue). Gamagatsu lures cost what they cost for a reason. They are well worth the money.

The wall off of Great Lakes and the wall of Lake forest holds smallies. There is also a discharge in between, but I only have those numbers, they are on the boat. Smallie and perch are both there. PM me a cell number and I will shoot you the numbers when I am back on the boat. 2 weeks I hope.
