The rain all last week put a damper on house projects for the weekend, so, Saturday, I got my first chance to get out in a while. I hadn't been to Turtlehead in a while, so I didn't know what to expect from the vegetation. Everything is pretty open all the way to the middle of the lake. With all the rain, the overcast skies, and the wind putting a chop on the water, I guessed the fish might be up shallow. I put on a fat shallow crank and went five for seven with four small bass and a warmouth. I'm pretty sure the two I missed were also warmouth. Stumbling and bumbling the crank along the top of drop-offs was the ticket for the bass. The warmouth came shallow over rocks.

Sunday, I fished a small, sloppy pond near my parents' house, hoping for a frog bite. I got nothing on the frog, but a nice 2-3lb bass on a Texas rig. The bites all weekend felt purposeful, like the fall bite might be starting.

You can have it. Winter is for cleaning reels and sorting tackle. I guess I just don't understand the appeal of sitting on a bucket staring at a hole in the ice.
