Got out today from 11am - 4pm wind was pretty rough at about 15-17mph out of the SSW. They have lowered the lake about a foot so had no problem getting under the bridge either way despite the high winds and waves. I casted cranks and pulled crawlers then would troll back against the wind to restart the drift. I was the only boat on the north side for most of the day, not a lot of boats out but it seemed some chitowner's where there by the rigs in the lot. It was a grind all day, fish were in pods all mixed together but no pattern as they would be gone or moved on a second pass.

Got 5 smallies, no size as the best touched 14"

Walleye came on "Stier-Death" crawlers - got a half-dozen with the best at 17"

Image

Got 4 stripers best at 21" bigger two hit cranks, smaller ones took crawler

Image

Monster slab crappie came trolling measured 14.5", got another measured 12" again trolling

And of course the cast of thousands of yellow bass tearing up my crawler (no pic)

Muskie and a Largemouth would have completed the super slam but I'll take what I got - it wasn't easy but just kept grinding spots and made LONG passes with the aid of the wind as the fish are tight together and not spread out. The lake is pretty close to going off and I think had I been there at open it would have been better, but then again fish when you can not when you wish you could.

what was the height between the water and the bridge? could you get under with a windshield on the boat?

I would think a full windshield probably not - I still have to duck down and drive the boat from a kneel on the floor. I had about 4 inches between the blade of my trolling motor and bottom of the bridge - when the water was higher I had to take the blade off. If you have one of those plastic console windshields you probably can make it if you have someone up front pushing you down as you go under. Not sure how much more they will pump but it was going good yesterday and we are going to get more rain so who knows where it will settle out.

Which lake between Lasalle and Big H is better for yellow bass.Since the Illinois will be messed up for awhile I'd like to get some for a fish fry.

RT I have never actually caught a yellow bass out of lasalle, and I have fished it a lot. In Heidecke there are times when whatever you do you can't keep them off. I would say focus your efforts there. Always the chance to get some really nice crappies to add to the fry too.

Good luck

Something us river guys know well :)

The other way of saying that is, I have no clue what the pattern is so I'm just going to try a bunch of stuff until they bite on something

I went to some of Spence Petros' seminars and he always said if conventional thinking doesn't work then try unconventional.
