Hey everyone,

Do you have to register a canoe in the state of IL if you mount a trolling motor to it? Looking to use it for duck hunting etc...

Thanks, bloodsweatscales

You have to register either way. Kayak registration is around $6 per year. Not sure if that changes when you add a motor.

Wrong. Non-motorized watercraft, canoe, kayak, paddle boat, or sail board, in Illinois are no longer required to be titled/registered in Illinois, unless the vessels have a motor or sail.

I bought two yaks in 2016 and the store said they needed permits, not registration. $6.00 available at stores like Dick's etc.

I misunderstood the semantics of the question. No official registration, but a stamp is needed yearly: https://www.dnr.illinois.gov/boating/Pa ... tamps.aspx

This does classify them as Non-Motored, so you may need a more complete registration if you add an engine. I'd call Rob at Lake Michigan Angler as he'd likely know the full answer.

A canoe or kayak does not have to be registered, but you need to buy the water usage stamp.

A POWERED (motor, engine, or sail) canoe or kayak is treated as a boat and needs to be registered.
