I normally don't fish open water crappie but I got a bunch of minnows left from our perch shutout last week so I was going to go to Arrowhead lake and give the crappies a try.I know the depths in most places from ice fishing are 10-12 feet.My question is how far off the bottom should I set my bait with a slip bobber? Thanks for any input.

I usually wait for spring and fall spawning activities, fishing the woody debris anywhere on any lake.

However, crappie will suspend - so try 1.5-3 feet off the bottom; or half way up a hump or river channel wall.

During the summer, I see a lot of crappie caught out of Arrowhead in the 3-5 ft depth range. They hug the drop-offs. Not sure if it's the same this early, but they'll be moving shallow for the spawn in the not-too-distant future.

Not sure about Arrowhead but was getting Crappie at Tampier along the rocks on 131st about 3 ft down over 5 to 6 ft of water nothing real big but a lot of action.
